Senior Data Analyst

Wärtsilä is leading the maritime industry’s transformation towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. We at Wärtsilä Marine Power are proud to offer our customers the world’s widest network of maritime expertise and the full portfolio from engines to lifecycle solutions.

We want to change the course towards an interconnected and cleaner maritime future and are constantly on the lookout for future-oriented talent to join our team and to work towards enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services - together. Are you ready to jump onboard?

We are now looking for a Data Analyst to join our Data Science team in Optimization group at Helsinki Office in Finland!

Voyage Services is committed to help shipping companies save fuel by using vessel performance data to reduce consumption: our servers crunch millions of data measurements every day across thousands of ships sailing around the world, and our data, insight, and algorithms help them achieve optimal hydrodynamic and operational performance. With our unique technology, the worlds’ largest ships reduce their CO2 emissions and reach their destinations with maximal fuel efficiency and safety.

For us, it is cutting edge technology. For our customers and competitors, it is magic.

For example, our team builds and maintains models and optimization algorithms to support the Fleet Optimization Solutions product (https://www.wartsila.com/voyage/fos)

What will be your objectives?

As a Data Analyst in the Data Science Team, you will dive deep into the data and serve as a bridge between the Data Science team, other internal teams, and in many cases the customers themselves.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Facilitating the introduction of new features by validating and explaining the behavior of our algorithms

  • Model debugging and troubleshooting: Conducting analysis and tests on reported bugs, identifying any issues or anomalies, and collaborating closely with data scientists to resolve them.

  • Communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts into clear and concise language that can be easily understood.

  • Creating user-friendly tools that empower the Customer Support team to effectively utilize our models. These tools will streamline their workflow, enabling efficient access, interpretation, and leveraging of insights generated by our algorithms.

  • Evaluating the performance of the models through one-off analysis.

  • Applying your Python skills to perform one-off analysis and data visualizations, enabling insights into vessel operations and optimization solutions.

Skills we are looking for (a successful candidate will have some of these):

  • Master's degree in a relevant field such as Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or a related discipline.

  • Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in data manipulation, analysis, and visualization libraries such as pandas, NumPy, and Matplotlib/Seaborn

  • Experience with git, Linux, and Docker

  • Communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment

Why you and us?

Our team is a mature agile team with 6 members with expertise in math, physics, software development, and analytics, in varying proportions. We give each member independence to experiment with their own approaches. We value transparency and believe in agile way of working where members regardless of their seniority or backgrounds can have an equal impact to the team’s decision-making. Moreover, by joining our team, you will have the chance to continuously improve your skills and advance your career to new heights.

We hope that you are as passionate about data science and ensuring good code quality as we are. We value diversity, appreciate difficult discussions, sincere and straightforward feedbacks, and challenges to the status quo. We hope that you share these values as well! Additionally, we hope you are comfortable working both independently and in cooperation with other team members. Besides professional work, we also enjoy each other's company and sometimes hang out after work if schedule and family life allows.

Our team primarily works remotely, but we make an effort to gather once a week at Helsinki office.

In addition, by joining our team, you can contribute to build technology that matters:

  • Implement IoT-based technology on vessels the size of small cities

  • Build something you can be proud of beyond your professional life. Your work directly affects the CO2 emissions of a fleet of hundreds, or possibly thousands of ocean-going ships.

  • Participate in building products that are used onboard by the captains themselves
